I’m at Esquilino, in the heart of Rome, in a district that spans centuries of history, between Santa Maria Maggiore and the Colosseum. It is one of those winter Sundays of blue sky and clear air. It is one of those Sundays that reveals a sly and lazy Rome, a Rome made up of churches and old ladies with shopping bag.
Panella is an institution in Rome, a bakery which is always been famous for his "sculptures" of bread, but also for a very high level pastry. Lately, it has extended its range and has become a highlight for aperitif time, brunch and Sunday breakfast. An excellent coffee is accompanied by a choice of zabaione (cream made of egg yolks, sugar and a bit of sweet wine) or pistachio cream and croissants just perfect, almost an archetype of croissants. Although the shortbreads are not cheap, they are a real experience.
1. AUDITORIUM DI MECENATE: a mysterious semi buried structure emerges in front of Panella, a magnificent monumental fountain. Full of paintings depicting plants and animals, it creates a bucolic setting in the heart of the city.
2. PARCO DEL COLLE OPPIO: a park removed from degradation and returned to the city in the last years.
